A Day in the Life

“What is your day like?” This is the question I have been asked the most, so I will do my best to answer it. In the grand scheme of things, it’s early in the move still, so the day to day will change, and I will be sure to update you when that happens.

In the past few years, Todd and I have become…shudder to think…morning people. I blame having children – and dogs. That hasn’t changed here in Palau. We tend to wake between 6:30 and 7:00am. Breakfast for me is usually eggs and toast, or Nutella on toast, or just toast. And coffee. The coffeemaker was the first purchase here. IYKYK. Since school hasn’t started yet, we let the boys sleep in. Todd gets ready for work.

Wait. Pause. Geography lesson.

Our apartment is in Koror (in the Meyungs hamlet to be specific). Koror is also where a majority of people live, where most of the grocery stores are, etc. However, the capital city is in Melekeok (ma-lek-ee-oak). It’s about a 45 minute drive (yes the road is paved, though it’s very curvy). Todd meets the Marshalls at the courthouse in Koror and they drive him to work every day. There are 2 other judges living in our building, so some days Todd rides with them to the courthouse to pick up the shuttle. Other days, I drive him down. We are a 1 car family, and I get dibs!

After I drop him off, it’s back to the apartment to feed the boys and get ready for whatever the day brings.

Right now, what the day has brought has been mostly exploring, shopping, settling in.

Sometimes that is boring stuff like doing dishes (well, that’s every day), laundry (I forgot the old bring your quarters to the laundry room days), and cleaning.

Most of our exploring has centered around the water. We’ve found a few swimming spots, been snorkeling, visiting one of the many rock islands, and currently, the boys are getting SCUBA certified. I will do several posts about those things specifically.

Shopping here is … different, but also not. Again, a whole post dedicated to that experience coming up.

Every payday Friday, they have what’s called the Night Market. Various restaurants set up tents and sell street food. Vendors set up their wares. We went to one and have another coming up. Pictures, video, and a post incoming for that too. Local farmers also set up and sell fruits and vegetables, and I will definitely be sharing that.

Most evenings are pretty calm. Sometimes we go for walks or swims. I cook, though not all my kitchen supplies are here yet, so that hasn’t gone as well as I hoped, or we go out. We’ve been trying to hit various restaurants, and have a found a few favorites. One in particular, but again, that’s for another post.

Todd loves going on the balcony to see the sunset. The boys are very grateful for TV, WiFi, and their Nintendo Switch. We’ve been invited to try out a volleyball league, and I will definitely report back from that!

I feel like this post has been mostly teasing other posts, but I promise those will be good. I need some good pictures for all my adoring fans.

Please comment with any questions or suggestions for future posts.

I’ll leave you with this.
